Almost quarter of our life is spent executing such a vital function, so it only makes sense to aim for good quality sleep for the countless health benefits. Well, that starts from choosing the right mattress as, believe it not, selecting the right sleeping surface can greatly affect the quality of your dreams and spinal health.

Knowing how to choose the right mattress can be a little more complex than we realise at first. Here are a few tips from Pepper Sq on how to make "buying a mattress" easier and more straightforward.

Sleep is an essential part of a life cycle: an average person spends about 229,961 hours or 26 years asleep! Just let that sink in...

HOW TO CHOOSE THE RIGHT MATTRESS?

When it comes to choosing the right mattress, it is important to think of what kind of a sleeper you are and of course the size of your room or bed.  Analyse your preferences and behaviour: do you roll over a lot? Do you like an enveloping feeling and do you tend to get hot or cold at night?

The right mattress can serve you a lifetime, so it's often best to forgo the cheaper items that are produced by unknown brands. You never know what they are made of and if they will cause you allergic reactions or be a potential fire hazard.

Good quality mattresses producers do not only clearly state all the materials, but provide a guarantee.  All of the options from our mattress range are recyclable and sustainable to reduce the carbon footprint.

What is the best mattress type?

As to what's available on the market, almost all mattresses can represent one of five types — memory foam, pocket sprung, hybrid, latex, or airbed. The innersprings or hybrid are the most popular option, however, recently, due to ecological awareness trend gaining popularity, eco-friendly options seem to be the next crowd favourite.

Memory Foam Mattress mould to your body, and also responds temperature and weight. . The foam mattresses provide pressure relief and motion isolation that make these mattresses are good choice for couples or lightweight side sleepers. But these mattresses aren’t for everyone. Sinking into the foam insulates the body and can make it harder to turn over, so it might not be the best choice if you’re often too hot or tend to roll over a lot.

Latex Mattresses are similar to memory foam, but all layers are made from latex rubber. Most common used in organic mattresses.  Latex mattress will provide great bounce and durability.  It's best choice for eco-conscious customers if the mattress made from organic latex. Please ensure that you do not have allergy on latex.

Innerspring Mattresses don't mould to your shape in the same way as the memory foam one does, but still offers a sufficient support for your back. Their sleeping surface is bouncier and has limited motion isolation. They also tend not to be as warm as memory foam mattresses, which could be an important consideration if you tend to find yourself too warm at night.  In addition, innerspring mattress  won’t dip in the middle, which is perfect if you have tendency to roll over.

Hybrid Mattresses made from combination of layers such as pocket springs and memory foam or latex to provide most balanced support and sleeping comfort. Typically, hybrid mattress has a pocket-sprung base as core support and a substantial foam top layer to respond your body shape. The hybrid  have a more “balanced” feel in comparison with innerspring or foam mattress.

Airbeds are designed with an an air chamber as their support core. A pump is built into the mattress and you can increase or reduce air volume to your preferable level of firmness. In addition, you can set different level of firmness on each side, that makes airbeds very popular amongst  couples.

Pocket sprung or non-sprung mattresses?

Pocket sprung mattress won’t make you warmer at night and they won't dip in the middle, which is perfect if you are an active sleeper that moves around a lot. Pocket sprung mattresses don't mould to your shape (like the memory foam ones), and they offer sufficient support for your back. They also tend to be a bit cooler as they don't keep in the warmth as much, which could be an important consideration if you tend to find yourself too warm at night or if you live in specific climatic conditions that are out of your control.

Pocket Sprung mattresses are the most popular option in the UK.  They have springs to provide the necessary core support. Individually pocketed spring mattresses are believed to be the best of the bunch because the springs conform and contour to your body shape, without dipping too much, yet providing just enough support and comfort.

Unlike sprung mattresses, memory foam mattresses mould to your body due to heat of your body softening them in the right spots. But they aren't everyone's cup of tea as sinking into the foam insulates the body and can make it harder to turn over. Not everyone likes that feeling or even find it comfortable, especially if you were used to regular pocket sprung mattresses growing up.

It also might not be the best choice if tend to feel too hot or roll over a lot in your sleep.  Memory foam mattresses are the right choice for you if you are looking out to decrease any pain that may occur if you sleep in an uncomfortable position, or if you want to take to take care of your back as  the mattress moulds to your body shape, which helps to align your spine.  It is a good choice for you if you are experiencing problems with allergies. When your back needs more support, as the mattress moulds to your body shape and helps to align your spine.

What is the right mattress firmness?

Mattress firmness is a fundamental factor that contributes to the comfort of the mattress. Your sleeping area can range from soft, to medium, to firm.

Mattress firmness is your personal preference. It's myth that mattress has to be hard to provide best support to your body.

An average person that enjoys sleeping on the side generally prefers a soft bed. Bigger individuals that opt for the back sleeping position may want an extra firm mattress.

Mattresses with medium firmness tend to be universal choice for work for all bodyweight and sleeping preferences, so if you're unsure what first mattress to buy, this could be a good a good starting option before you form any preferences.

Usually, 'orthopedic mattresses' are firm, and provide strongest support to the back. At the same time, you can find "orthopedic " in description of many mattresses today - as with latest technologies many mattresses can fall in this category.

What size of the mattress to buy ?

The mattress size should be the same size as your bed frame.  As example, if you have king size bed frame, you  should buy king size mattress.  Before you go ahead with your purchase check your bed frame size - you can find EU and UK standard beds in the UK. It's important to check with retailer whether it's UK or EU standard bed frame or measure bed frame at home .
